Beyond Apocalypse
Hello!
No words from me today, just a recommendation to listen to a fantastic panel of writers, actors, TV producers and climate change leaders discussing climate fiction in Beyond Apocalypse: Alternative Climate Futures in Film and TV
Featuring international climate leader Christiana Figueres (Outrage + Optimism, The Future We Choose), Rosario Dawson (DMZ, Unforgettable), Dorothy Fortenberry (The Handmaid's Tale, Extrapolations) and Sarah Treem (The Affair). Moderated by writer and activist Baratunde Thurston (How to Citizen with Baratunde).
You’ll hear how these artists and activists are taking climate change out of the ‘meta’ experience and into individual day to day life. How to use climate change to motivate characters. About breaking free from the US tendency to rely on the ‘hero’s journey’ narrative. Stories are about relationships, and the climate frames our relationship with everything: weather, the seasons, our food, our children, our travel, so we can weave into all aspects of our writing.
How can Hollywood change these stories? By changing the gatekeepers. By shifting the ownership of stories from the white, male and wealthy sphere, to the communities and people that are hit the hardest by climate change, now and in the future: the impoverished; migrants; women; indigenous peoples. It’s an interesting forty minutes, so pop your headphones on.
Happy listening.
